- Big City Blues have gone away Goin' up to the mountains, that's where I'm gonna stay Can't live in Detroit, ain't now way Can't live in New York, Chicago, or LA "Cause there's garbage on the streets, garbage on the train Garbage in my blood, and garbage in my brain Those Big City Blues have gone away Goin' up to the mountains, that's where I'm gonna stay Goin' away I'm gonna pitch me a tent, gonna build me a fire Ain't paying' no rent or pluggin' in no wires "Cause there's no one here, no one but me I guess I'll just sit here all day and talk to this old tree Those Big City Blues have gone away Goin' up to the mountains, that's where I'm gonna stay

- I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows I'm gonna throw in my last quarter just to see where it goes I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows Well the sun is out and shining bright today And I had a bunch of problems but they all drifted away So I'll play this old guitar and I think I'm gonna stay "Cause the sun is out and shining bright today And it's warm out for the first time in a year I can hear the snowflakes melting and they're running' oh, so clear I found a nice old rock and I think I'll sit right here "Cause it's warm out for the first time in a year - So I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows I'm gonna throw in my last quarter just to see where it goes I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows Well it isn't quite a river, it's just a stream And I love to see the pebbles roll and watch the current gleam I feel like I've been here before, maybe it was just a dream But it isn't quite a river, it's just a stream - I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows I'm gonna throw in my last quarter just to see where it goes I'm gonna sit down by the water where it flows

When I went walking' like I did every day To the same old places I always used to play Never knew I'd find you and give my love away There you stood with your hand at your side And a look in your face that you did not try to hide Now I'm desperately waiting just to find out what's inside - I've got too much heart in you And I don't know what to do Should I follow you home, let myself be led? I don't want your voodoo to get stuck inside my head But I just can't resist you when I wake up in your bed - I've got too much heart in you and I don't know what to do It's your arms and your legs and the smell of your hair The things that you own and the clothes that you wear The smile on your lips, your kiss and your stare - I've got too much heart in you And I don't know what to do
4.
Sometimes you've got to treat yourself right Sometimes you've got to do the best for you So don't waste your time trying' to make a dime Just to give the other 90 to the man You'll be just fine if you unwind But you gotta give yourself a hand
5.
You can't stop the rain from fallin' if it wants to fall Or the wind from calling' if it wants to call You can't stop the branches shaking' in the breeze Or a puddle icin' in a winter freeze Don't matter how you're begging' please No, you won't have nothin' if you live your life on your knees You can stop the pattern of a broken dream It ain't impossible as it may seem You can break a cycle if you only try Just look that mirror in the eye Don't beg your daddy in the sky You got your wings so don't forget to fly, bye bye - 'Cause you can have your heaven if it's te race you run But it's hell you'll get if you will wait till life is done 'Cause nobody is watching you from high upon a throne But just because they were lying, it doesn't mean you're all alone You can take the wheel of your own destiny And make the world the best it can be But you must see the forest through all of the trees And notice your own victories Just listen to the honeybees No, you won't have nothin' if you live your life on your knees
6.
There ain't no telling' when the sun gon' shine To shed some light on this heart of mine There ain't no telling' when the stars come out Ain't seen no cloud in this spirit drought There ain't no telling' when the wind gon' blow Even the weatherman doesn't know There ain't no feeling like a sudden breeze To soothe my soul and put my mind at ease - And this just might be the day I put my blues away Can you love something you've never seen Or be somebody you've never been When your heart is thirsty for a water drink But there river's run-in' with oil and ink? I look for something to stop the thirst "Cause feeling' lonely can be the worst Then I found my fairy at a higher ground She sung so sweet with that lonesome sound - And this just might be the day I put my blues away So I'm waiting right here for the perfect night To see her again and make me feel alright I'ts almost here, I can see it now Gotta keep my cool, I can wait somehow - And this just might be the day I put my blues away

Old Ghosts 03:49
Window glass is fogged and frosted by The breath of passing time with cold blood Ancient memories have come to light Old ghosts have returned tonight Can it be the friend I used to know Breathing once again thought buried? Wonders of the spirit come to light Old ghosts have returned tonight - Stay in the twilight In shadows you are bound, the darkness all around Far Away from my light I cannot bear to see what you've come to be Visits from the tomb are come at last Reminders of a face I'd long left Bring the darknened past into the light Old ghosts have returned tonight

Brighter Day 03:25
In the morning when I wake up to the frost out on the grass And I know there isn't nothin' that could pass That would make this go away I know it's gonna be a brighter day In the morning when I wake up to guitars out on the porch And the sun is gonna rise, it's gonna scorch Gonna pick it up and play I know it's gonna be a brighter day -And the world outside, it offers me a ride down the road And the world outside's got nothin' left to hide It has showed all it knowed In the morning when I wake up to a coffee and a toast And I sit beside the one I love the most Got no words that I can say I know it's gonna be a brighter day -And the world outside, it offers me a ride down the road And the world outside's got nothin' left to hide It has showed all it knowed In the morning when I think of all the dreams I've seen at night And I try to make them real with all my might I hope they never go away I know it's gonna be a brighter day
9.
Midnight Sky 04:11
- Midnight Sky, don't be shy Who ever thought there'd be too much light to see? Without the dark, the light can never be And I feel the pull to see in full All that there is to see, so - Midnight Sky, don't be shy Can't find my link to the source in static modernity So won't you show me light that is and always will be? 'Cause I feel the pull to see in full All that there is to see Midnight Sky, you know why I feel like I must be...

I met you in the morning, we were talkin' over satellite Wondering if we'd ever see the sun as it burned so bright And then without a warning, a wonder in a strange delight I could feel your body next to mine and it felt so right I was hangin' from the ceiling, sleeping' in the afternoon Walkin' to the rhythm of the world as it played a tune Your lovin' left me reeling' like oceans in a harvest moon Wading on the waves of gravity and never leave the room - Will it ever be the way? I thought we'd never see the day But when I think about it now, it seems so long ago somehow But it really only happened yesterday And time just seems to float and go away I had a premonition that something would go down tonight A phantom from another lonely world that was out of sight Was it superstition or could I get the timing right? Either way I found myself alone as you took your flight - Will it ever be the way? I thought we'd never see the day But when I think about it now, it seems so long ago somehow But it really only happened yesterday And time just seems to float and go away

Garden Bed 04:23
It's a long and dusty road on the way to Mendocino With my spirit low and canteen running dry I lost everything I had at a pitstop back in Reno And the desert made me feel like I might die The heat was coming' on as the morning sun was risin' I was desperate for a spot to lay my load When right there, out of nowhere, far out on the horizon A garden just appeared along the road The garden, it was lush and the honey bees were buzzin' When I heard a footstep glide along the row I gathered pears and apples and melons by the dozen When a voice came clear I swear that I should know "You're welcome in my garden if you promise not to leave it, You can eat but only if you do so here. If you cast your gaze away there won't be nothin' to receive it So remain and you'll have nothing more to fear, dry your tears." - The fruit fell from the vine without a word What's real and what's imagined? The line if often blurred "For those who don't forget, there is not death," she said As she laid herself beneath her garden bed Her words were young but ancient as she talked of her oasis In between her pillars standing like a queen I'd laid my body down in a million shady places But this one was like nothing I had seen Then after time had passed and I ate my fill of berries She offered me a dip beneath the stream But when I turned around, there were no more trees or fairies And the desert sand was all that could be seen Was it just a dream? - The fruit fell from the vine without a word What's real and what's imagined? The line if often blurred "For those who don't forget, there is not death," she said As she laid herself beneath her garden bed

I ain't askin' for nothin' that I know you can't spare But wherever you're goin', won't you please take me there? I don't want you to give up anything you can't spare So wherever you're goin', won't you please take me there? - I spent a long time away And every hour that passed felt like a day On my bended knees I've had to pray Now I'm back, back here to stay I can't get you no diamonds for your finger to wear But wherever you're goin,' won't you please take me there? And I picked you these flowers to put in your hair So wherever you're goin', won't you please take me there? - Spent a long time away Now I'm back, back here to stay I would follow your footsteps just about anywhere So wherever you're goin', won't you please take me there?
13.
Keep it to yourself if it ain't got nothing to do with me I'l keep it to myself if it ain't got nothing to do with you Please don't hold it against me, there ain't nothin' I can do I'll keep it to myself if I ain't got nothin' nice to say So keep it to yourself if it is ugly or untrue And if you don't hold it against me I won't hold it against you
14.
Got that shovel in my hand And I'm digging' up the land Gotta turn that soil around Gonna take my seeds and put them in the ground I'm dependin' on the sun There's no way to tell until the spring has come Everybody's gotta feed And I'm hopin' that the earth will give me everything I need - I'm gonna plant me a row Can't wait for summertime to come There's a lot of work that still needs to be done Gotta do it in the sun That's where all that I need is coming' from Got me prayin' for the rain And if it don't come soon I think I'll go insane In the autumn, harvest time You better get it all inside before it withers on the vine - I'm gonna plant me a row
15.
You can never tell what the day brings to your doorstep You can only try to live and make it right And it's just as well, 'cause a crystal ball ain't nothin' But a way to see what could be or what might I got a deck of cards, see you looking' for your number And a suit that suits you well among the pack You're letting' down your guard, trying' to find out a solution To the riddles of a hidden Zodiak Dreams and visions give a glimpse of futures that could be But if you depend upon them, don't expect they'll make you free Just wait and see - We could sit around and talk until the sun goes down Or grab our coats and take a walk to town But it really doesn't matter if we stay or if we go I hope you know I don't mind the truth 'cause it's a better way of dealin' Than to hide behind the things you wish were real So did you bring vermouth? "Cause I feel like tellin' secrets And the bottle makes the pain harder to feel Dreams and visions give a glimpse of futures that could be But if you depend upon them, don't expect they'll make you free Just wait and see - We could sit around and talk until the sun goes down Or grab our coats and take a walk to town But it really doesn't matter if we stay or if we go I hope you know 'Cause even if the thunder comes and we're both stuck outside I'll stay next to the road and hitch a ride "Cause it really doesn't matter if we stay or if we go I hope you know...

Walkin' 04:09
-I'm walking', got my feet on the ground And I'm walking' the whole world around I ain't got no wheels to take me out But that ain't nothin' to cry about I got my book and a pack upon my back And I'll walk until my footsteps bring me back Take a little step to the left Give me a minute to catch my breath Take a little step to the right I won't stop until I see the light -I'm walking', got my feet on the ground And I'm walking' the whole world around Over every mountain, every path Got a spring in my step and it's gonna last I got time to think and time to write a song And I'll walk that path if it's a hundred miles long Take a little step to the left Give me a minute to catch my breath Take a little step to the right I won't stop until I see the light I'm climbing' up the ridge, through the trees Feel the mighty forest in the breeze Pavement road or desert sand, I'm gonna walk just as long as I can -I'm walking', got my feet on the ground And I'm walking' the whole world around

about

Written and recorded in the spring and summer of 2019, Garrett Deming's new offering "OATS & YARROW" marks a return to the acoustic roots that inspired him to begin playing music as a young man. Inspired by the Swedish countryside and filtered through American eyes, this collection of 16 songs echoes the vibe of the great 1960's and 70's hippie songwriters and the deep roots of American music that run through all our veins. Clean, sparkling production and a few guest spots from longtime friend and musician Bradford Allen brings an intimate warmth to these songs that only a close friendship can. With its acoustic sounds, harmonised vocal layers, and down-to-earth performances, "Oats & Yarrow" tiptoes around country, folk, blues, and rock, while embodying its own unique space within contemporary music.

Separated into two sections, "OATS & YARROW" consists of two separate batches of songs. "OATS," the first 7 tracks, were recorded during the spring of 2019 in upstate New York as a vehicle for Allen and Deming to collaborate after years of playing together without any recordings. These songs feature Allen as an instrumentalist and producer, and contain lush layered instruments. Allen's ear for arranging is central to these tunes. As oats are a feed grain, sowed with care and cultivated for nourishment, OATS brings a nourishing natural feeling while also displaying the careful hand of the cultivator.

YARROW came about most unexpectedly, just as the yarrow flower grows as a weed in disturbed soil. After moving to the Swedish countryside in the summer of 2019, Deming was struck with a jolt of inspiration, writing and recording over a dozen songs in about 6 weeks. Tracks 8-16 sprung up like weeds and were captured in the moment, as one dries flowers they have foraged along the side of the road. Here Deming displays a wide range of styles centered in rural music, and he performs all instruments. There is a certain roughness to this second section of the album, but like the yarrow flower, the songs have healing properties. Mixed and mastered by Allen, the second half of "OATS & YARROW" is the rawest of Deming's musical self.
